One of our regular walks starts at Eastwood Leisure Centre and follows the Basingstoke Canal towards the Peace Garden — a tranquil and reflective destination.

Canal Walk

Following the historic Basingstoke Canal, the walk covers approximately 3–4 miles and takes around 90 minutes, depending on the return route. Along the way, you may spot narrowboats, locks, and local wildlife — perhaps even herons, kingfishers, or dragonflies!

The Peace Garden at the Muslim Burial Ground

Originally established in 1917 as a burial ground for Muslim Indian soldiers, this Grade II listed site has since been transformed into a Peace Garden. A memorial stone commemorates the 27 soldiers who died in WWI and WWII, with 27 Himalayan birch trees planted in their memory. Visitors can also enjoy a serene reflecting pond, a Mughal-inspired chhatri (domed gateway), and boundary walls echoing the architecture of the nearby Shah Jahan Mosque.

Amenities

Eastwood Leisure Centre offers free parking, toilet facilities, and a small café.

This peaceful and scenic walk offers a moment for quiet reflection, history, and natural beauty. The Peace Garden is open daily, year-round, and free to visit. It truly is the perfect gentle walk.
