There have been lots of studies done about how much time we spend at work over our lifetimes…some say 90,000 hours, some calculate it’s a third of our lives, some estimate 3,500 days…whichever one you read, it’s a lot!
On World Mental Health Day, which took place this year on 10 October, the theme was all about workplace mental health. Since we spend so much time working, and with our jobs often a source of stress, this theme is important.
But how can we prioritise our mental health at work?
One way is to bring conversations about mental wellbeing into your workplace. Get talking about it with your colleagues. Talking about mental health is a great way to bust any taboos and to ensure everyone knows it’s ok – even encouraged – to take moments for your wellbeing at work.
It doesn’t have to be an hour of yoga every day. It can be taking 5 minutes for mindful activity. A lunch break in nature. Taking a break to read or listening to a mood-boosting song. A wellbeing conversation with a manager or peer. Writing your thoughts can often organise them or give them clarity – try taking a minute to jot down a to-do list or write out your worries.
How do you support your own mental health at work? Let us know in the comments.
