Discover nature’s therapy this winter

Now that the clocks have gone back, it’s a bit darker, a bit colder and a bit wetter. It’d be understandable if you’ve found you aren’t getting as much fresh air as you did before.

Here at Give, we know that connecting with nature – in any weather – can make a positive difference to our day. In fact, the NHS began what’s known as ‘green social prescribing’ recently, which is when someone is supported to engage in nature-based interventions and activities to improve their mental and physical health.

Ancient Greek philosopher, Hippocrates, once said, “walking is man’s best medicine”, but modern research proves time and again that things like walking schemes, community gardening, outdoor exercise and nature-based arts and cultural activities can help with a variety of mental and physical health problems.

Come rain or shine, our volunteers run walking groups in some of Surrey’s abundant and beautiful green spaces. At this time of year, we like nothing better than to hear the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, feel the warm sun on our cold noses, embrace the raindrops that pitter-patter onto our umbrellas, spot the changing flora and fauna – and most of all, share conversation and companionship with fellow walkers.

If you’re struggling to step out of your front door, please consider joining us. Our walks are gentle and tend not to be more than an hour long – around 6,000 steps. Or if you’re looking for inspiration of your own, take a look at the National Trust’s recommended walking routes in Surrey: Top walks in Surrey | National Trust.
