Nestled on the edge of Woking, St John’s is a quiet and charming village with a welcoming community feel and plenty of green space to enjoy. Whether you’re after a peaceful stroll, or a new place to explore, St John's has lots to offer.

History

The Basingstoke Canal first opened in 1794 and winds its way through St John’s. Canal life saw the community grow and many of the houses we see today were built in the 1800s. One landmark that has stood the test of time is The Rowbarge Pub, originally built in the 18th century to serve canal workers.. St John’s Village itself is named after the parish church, St John the Baptist, which was completed in 1842.

Nature and Leisure

At the heart of the village is St John’s Lye, a wide open green space where you’ll find a children’s play area, plenty of space to picnic and easy access to woodland. The area has been recognised as a Site of Nature Conservation Importance, making it a real haven for wildlife. Alongside the natural beauty, the village has a friendly centre with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Parking is straightforward too, with a free car park available.

If you’d like to get to know the village and its surroundings, why not come along to our Thursday morning walking group? It’s a brilliant way to explore the area and meet new people.
